TOUGH TO PICK IT

Welcome to California for the running of the Breeders' Bowl Juvenile Turf
Grade I One mile Firm Turf $1,000,000 All horses, 2 years old. Fourteen of the best turf 2yrolds go to the wire here in the quest for glory. The winner will put themselves in the running for 2yrold of the year.

1 177162 AHEAD AND ZILLION(KY) mgfarms H Harzheim 7/1

Mgfarms Stables trained colt ranked #16 turf classic he is by FUSAICHI PEGASUS from EDINAZ HOLLANDIA dam also of GW VENI VIDI VISA(KY) and SW FUCHINDY(KY). Started his career in February and has raced 6 times for 4 wins and 2 seconds and $338,640 he won a msw second up over 6f 77sp then won Alw-46200NW2L 6f 76sp was swapped to mile racing for his last two starts winning the St-Tag Team Championship 2009 in a stunning 91sp and ran even better when winning the Looking Forward Stakes-G3 8f 97sp. Will race handy to the pace and should come through in the stretch.

2 72970 DANCING HOME(ENG) cab1 R Harzheim 18/1

Cab Stables trained colt ranked #19 turf classic he is by the first season sire NEW APPROACH (IRE) from the he-mare INCREDIBLE HOMER he has raced 7 times winning 2 but running 2nd three times also winning $173,440 he won two 6f races early on and has run 2nds in The Railaway-G3 6f The Cyborg-G3 6f and last time out in the 8f The Royal Dodge-G2 89sp. A deep closer who is bred to run this distance and probably a lot further he will need plenty of luck in stretch to grab the leaders here.

3 183014 VULCANIC(AUS) slowhand W McClendon 8/1

THE EMPIRE - SLIGHTLY LESS EVIL EVERYDAY trained colt ranked #22 in turf classic he is by ENCOSTA DE LAGO (AUS) GP DEPUTY SECRETARY he has raced 4 times winning 3 including The Angle Stakes 6f and last time out The Les Paul-G3 8f in a stunning 90sp another back runner who will be storming home late meaning the result of this race could change drastically in the last furlong. Bred to be very good horse and will figure in this finish. His jockey will try to get an economical trip and save some petrol for the run home.

4 133915 DUSSELDORF(GER) lenny4 T Small 8/1

THE EMPIRE - SLIGHTLY LESS EVIL EVERYDAY second runner in this field a colt ranked #8 turf classic he is by MONSUN(GER) from the SW he-mare SIMPLE PASSING(IRE) three stats for three wins for this fellow you cant ask much more than that he won first up over 6f msw 75sp the won a Alw-46200NW2L 6.5f 84sp and last time out The Royal Dodge-G2 8f 92sp improving out of site with every run and any more improvement will see him up with the leaders at the wire. Likely to race in or near the pace all the way he is by a German sire with a strong representation of staying runners.

5 178517 WITHERDEN(IRE) hollandia3 T Loesch 9/1

Hollandia3 Stables trained colt ranked # 24 turf classic he is by HIGH CHAPARRAL (IRE) from the lightly raced mare ZUR SPOOK(IRE) he has raced 7 times for 2 wins and 4 places and $139,821in earnings won in his 3rd start over 6f msw 69sp then ran 3rd The Triple P-G3 6f running on from midfield to finish less than a length from the winner and last time out he won the Fall Stakes-G3 8f once again coming from mid field to take victory in a 94sp a very strong time for a 2yrold from this draw should drop back early and dive bomb them in the stretch.

6 41474 COOLMORE LIGHTNING(IRE) desimster3 P Harzheim 9/1

Shamrock Stables trained colt ranked # 21 turf classic he is by MONTJEU (IRE) from the SP mare PEANUTBUTER KISSES(KY) he has raced 5 times for 2 wins and 2 2nds and $356,625in earnings won his first race in march over 5.5f 77sp then at his 3rd start won the Blazing Saddles Juvenile Dandy Turf Open -- Owner Restricted-Stk 8f 86sp was switched back to sprinting when a fine 4th in the Blue Diamond Road-G1 6f 81sp closing late in the stretch last time out it was back to mile racing in the Grand Critter Stakes-G2 when once again closing for 2nd will need to go faster here but he is capable of doing so. I spoke to his trainer at the track this morning and he said “I claimed his mare for 5k and she was a useful allowance runner for me and even became stakes placed. Decided to breed her to Montjeu and knew the colt was talented right away as he won his maiden debut convincingly and seemed bred to go longer. Took his 2nd in a g2 last out to get him into this race and I’m hoping he can improve off of that and put in a good run. I think his best is yet to come but he hasn't broken 90 yet and will need to get faster.”

7 164647 ROZELLE KNIGHT(ENG) bjbandit J Stivers 10/1

Bigkev and Bjbandit Farms trained colt ranked #12 turf classic he is by PIVOTAL(GB) x GONE WEST x DANEHILL he has raced 4 times for 3 wins and a 2nd $193,360 in winnings started racing in May with a win in a msw 6f 73sp then won Alw-30400NW2L 6f 83sp and again in The FRIDLEY Stakes 8f 85f ran a good 2nd last time out in the Knick Knack Juvenile-G2 89sp and this race may have convinced his trainer to have a go at this. I talked to him at track work during the week he said “No great story behind the breeding on this one. Pivotal got a major boost a couple of years back to reflect his real life success so I usually breed a couple each year. He also tends to not get picked up straight away for credits so after the Yanks have first crack Monday Night (Australian Time) I can still pick him up Tuesday morning with some decent DS's and DDS's. I love Gone West as a Dam sire and I have had plenty of success with him in the past. Pivotal also crosses well with the Mr P line so it was an easy choice for me. Danehill speaks for himself. Hasn’t enjoyed quite the success in the sim as he did in Australia but he is still a top class DS/DDS and I like to use the Northern Dancer cross with the Mr P whenever possible.

I had a pretty good opinion of him right from his debut although I never rated him my best 2yo (although he is the only one that qualified for the BB). He has improved with each challenge asked of him and after I rode him to a stakes win on his home track of NSW in week 4057 I decided to give him a chance to qualify for the BB. The Knick Knack juvenile was the obvious choice in Queensland although it was a little closer to the BB than I would have liked. He ran really well but found Dynamic Destiny a bit too good on the day.

This is the first week I have managed to get him sharp so I am hoping that might just give him the improvement needed to turn the tables on DD. I think he will be a better 3yo so I am not going to push too hard this year with him. This is only his 5th start and he will head back to Australia/Europe after this race with his main goal being the 2000 guineas next year.” he will race in or near the front all the way.

8 180598 BLACK GOLDNINER(JPN) bertaal J Caves 20/1

Balata Golf Resort trained colt ranked #14 turf classic he is by the Japanese sire BLACK HAWK (GB) from A Grade GW million dollar mare ALBERTA GOLD who won $1,466,498 in earnings her best win was the Sun State Cup-G1 over this journey and may point to the ideal distance for this colt he has raced 6 times for 2 wins and 4 places $169,450 in earnings won his first race in May a msw 6f 71sp has since been switched to 8f racing and in his last 2 starts has reached his best form when 2nd in The Champagne Mile-G2 82sp and a win in The GHOSTBUSTER Stakes 8f 72sp when he lead all the way will need to go faster here I tried to talk to his trainer but he was a little cagey when asked about his horses chances in this I caught up with him where else but on the golf links somewhere in Canada I asked if he had a comment but he wandered of saying something about rain and headed for the 19th hole. Good luck Bala and enjoy you drink at the bar.

9 16160 SOUTH OF SANITY(KY) sdmf1 B F Abman 10/1

Black Label Stables trained colt ranked #17 turf classic he is by DYNAFORMER from the SW he-mare EVELANGELIST(KY) he has started 7 times winning 3 and also 4 places $177,720 in earnings won 2nd up 6f msw 67sp then won 6.5f allowance 80sp then won The SHORE LUNCH Special-Stk 7.5f 83sp stepped up to a mile at his next start running 2nd in the Premie Champion Stakes-G3 79sp was 3rd in the Blue Diamond Road-G1 6f 84sp next time out and last start back at a mile ran 3rd The Bedford Stakes-G2 88sp 2 ˝ lengths from the winner probably a place chance really but could surprise with right run.

10 183046 DYNAMIC DESTINY(KY) sticks1 B Ball 9/1

Phantom Pharms trained colt ranked #5 turf classic royally bred runner by DYNAFORMER x NIJINSKY II x DANZIG started racing in April 5.5f win msw 71sp then won an open allowance 6.5f 86sp stepped up again in distance running 2nd The Vintage-G2 7.5f 78sp the hit the mile running last time out winning the Knick Knack Juvenile-G2 8f 92sp flying home from last to win going away. A repeat performance will make him the hardest to beat here hitting top form at the right time he has been trained to the minute.

11 181356 JUMPING DOWN(NZ) newceo K Ledwith 12/1

Whisper Stables trained colt ranked #6 turf classic is a Kiwi bred runner by ZABEEL(NZ) from STINK JUMPING he has raced 4 times winning 2 and having a 3rd $227,100 in earnings won first up in New Zealand over 5.5f 70sp ran 3rd The More Nay-G1 6f 82sp and last time out burst on the scene winning The Bedford Stakes-G2 8f 91sp has found the mile to his liking shooting home from the middle of the field. Talking to his trainer he said “He was bred on the strength of performances by All My Jumping who races out of the Willowisp yard. Zabeel has proved to be a decent producer of Turf animals that can run anything from sprints to long-route and I was hoping for something that might be in with a chance in next seasons English Classics.

After a solid-looking debut win, I decided to have a go at the early graded races and he wasn't disgraced when finishing 4th in the Norfellow G2 back in June. He looked in need of more ground but he came back exhausted. I put him away until the middle of August when I spotted the G1 More Nay as a likely comeback race and he ran a decent 3rd place. The 6 furlongs again looked on the short side. His big break came early last month when I entered him in the G2 Bedford Stakes - he loved it! He settled mid-pack and hit the straight running. He caught the early pace and stalkers in the final furlong and kicked again, winning by 2 lengths, going away.

He came Sharp a week early and will run RTG, but I think he has a realistic chance of being in the mix as they come into view.” GO THE KIWI’S

12 179590 PREPOSTERAGEOUS(ENG) jetersring D Evans 11/1

Otistaylor Stables trained colt ranked #3 turf classic beautifully bred by the sire of the moment MEDICEAN (GB) x DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) x ROBERTO has raced 5 times for 5 wins and $2,259,000 a great record started out winning a residency run Stakes race over 6f 68sp second up won The NOBLE SWORD Stakes 7.5f 80sp then The Coventry Steaks-G2 6F 82sp leading all the way and winning in fine style his only start over a mile produced a win in The Champagne Mile-G2 83sp winning by a head and last time out won The Golden Shoe-G1 6f 91sp I spoke to his trainer he said “Hawkz... I knew I had a good horse when your preview said he was the one to beat in the 17 horse CC stakes field... He has shown great heart in all his races since then... Even though I am pretty sure 8f is not his favourite distance I decided he had earned a chance to run on the sims biggest day... I hope he gives a good showing... Thanks for your confidence way back in the beginning…” on breeding and his one run at a mile he should handle it again if he does win number 6 will be chalked up.

13 88690 SEEKING A CAUSE(KY) keryn F Gossett 7/1

Topicount Stables trained colt ranked #13 turf classic he is by GIANT'S CAUSEWAY (IRE) from the 9 times G1 winning 2009 Class HOF inductee he-mare SEEKING SAL who earned $6,098,207 this colt has raced 6 times winning 3 and 3 placings $221,300 started his career in March winning the Ellerie Stakes 6f 77sp then Alw-40500NW2L 6f 70sp both races were in New Zealand his next start was a 3rd The Coventry Steaks-G2 77sp led all the way to win the Golden HandGrenade-G3 7f 87sp has tried a mile in his last two starts when 2nd Looking Forward Stakes-G3 94sp and 3rd the Knick Knack Juvenile-G2 88sp he was drifting in the last furlong of both races which puts a question mark over his chances here. SEEKING SAL won over this distance and as far as 11f in G1 company. If his jockey is a bit more patient in the running he may have a bit left for the run home.

14 178456 BOWPRINCE(IRE) ontarget N Lawton 12/1
