Sersave Streak Not What You May Think It Is
15 in a row is quite the streak, but the streak that Sersave has is what most want to avoid. Sersave recently finished in last place for the 15th consecutive time. I don’t know what the record for consecutive last place finishes is, but I am guessing it must be higher considering that the computer owned horses that fill short fields aren’t the best out there.
Sersave, a 9-year old misfit of a horse has somehow survived a dismal career and appeared in 98 races with an astonishing one win. He arguably may be one of the worse horses in the racing circuit today, however, he’s not the all time worse. The DerbyFever Hall of Fame denotes a horse by the name of Campanil as being winless in 100 starts and being in the money 3 times.
Sersave has one career win, and it took him 17 maiden races to get it. That win occurred in July of 2004 which makes him winless for the last 5 and a half years. I’m not sure if this is a record in length, but it would be in the running. It is rather odd that he ran his sole victory race in a speed of 80, his career best. Prior to that race, and ever since then, he has never exceeded a speed of 64, making the win a pure accident.
Somehow trainer Perks9 managed to bear this horse in their stable from May 2003 to June 2007, recording a record of 1-3-2 in 85 starts and earning just over $14,000 in the process. Undoubtedly, this horse cost him quite a few bucks. He sure is costing me some in the 13 races I have had him.
I have to admit, Sersave takes up space in one of my barns and was one of those unlikely draws you get when you open up a barn. My initial intent was to race him and the others I received as quickly as I could to get my 20 races in. Then it would be off to the auction house to clean out the bad and hopefully refill with some good (notice the word hopefully).
As time progressed, I realized that Sersave was rapidly approaching that career ending #100 race. So I decided, what the heck, I may as well get him there. He is very hard pressed to get a race in where his speed reaches 50, and as such, has gone off at odds well over 100-1 in his last 12 starts.
Sersave will soon be ending his racing career and will have an excellent chance to extend his last place streak to 16 and then 17. Heck, I may buy him a farewell race and give him a chance to win #2 if it can be stocked with other computer junk horses. Or maybe just sell him off and turn him into Gravy Train. We’ll see. (Ok, Ok, Ok…I’m kidding…He will go to the retirement home. I just typed that to see if anyone was paying attention).
