So Fast She's a Blur On The Track

By- Smokeglack

CK Blurred Cat is the deserved 2 yr old filly Eclipse Award champion in 2010. Let's take a closer look at this filly and her incredible season. CK Blurred Cat is the first year progeny of a "C" ranked mare, aptly named CK Blurred Vision. Mommy was no slouch on the racetrack either, albeit a short career. In 20 starts, CK Blurred Vision won 10 of 20 races, including her first 6 races. She won the Gr3 Love Muffins Stakes, and also won the Minnesota Downs Residency Oaks (a very tough race to win with such a good residency). She topped the 100 speed mark 9 times in 20 races. So why such a short career with a very good filly? I can't answer that, but maybe, just maybe, Docoz knew mommy was going to be a better producer than actual runner.

CK Blurred Cat's sire was chosen early in the year. It was to be Giant's Causeway. The son of Storm Cat mixed well with mommy's lines of Prospector and Northern Dancer on the back end. They don't get much more powerful than that. So with 3 of the most powerful stallion lines running through her blood, CK Blurred Cat was ready to make her racing debut. An early foal, Docoz chose an early MSW race in February. In a frigid day in Canada, Ck Blurred Cat lined up against 13 other hopefuls, going 6f. The betting public made her overwhelming favorite, and CK Blurred Cat did not disappoint. Breaking right off the flank of the frontrunner, CK Blurred Cat took control at the 3f marker and put away the competition easily through the stretch. CK Blurred Cat would get an 8 week break and resurface in a dual residency restricted allowance race. Representing Minnesota Downs Residency, Docoz was confident enough to send the filly in the open allowance race. In the 20 horse cavalry, Ck Blurred Cat went off 2 nd choice at 5-1. CK Blurred Cat broke 6 th , but spotting the leader only 1 ¾ lengths. She fell to 2 ¾ lengths back at the 3f marker. As the speed started to give way, CK Blurred Cat moved to within 2 nd at the top of the stretch. She felt the stick for the first time, and responded by edging clear through the stretch by a length. Her 82 speed number in a March race gave an indication that this filly might be something special. She was now 2 for 2 and had defeated 32 horses in two starts. Docoz would give the filly 7 weeks off now, and return in yet another restricted race. This time however it was a restricted stakes race with another residency. She would only be facing 19 more opponents, but at least it was fillies only. Docoz took the challenge for his residency and entered his filly on that July 4 th day. The betting public made her the 3-1 favorite. CK Blurred Cat broke 5 th , but again only letting the leaders get ahead by a length. Again with 3f to go, CK Blurred Cat was asked for a response. As usual, CK took the bit, and surged up to the leaders, drawing to within a nose at the top of the stretch. She again took to her business through the stretch and won by a measured length. She topped her career best speed number and was given an 85 for the effort. So now, in 3 races, (50 ) 2 yr old horses had fell victim to CK Blurred Cat. And it was only July. Her next start in 6 weeks was her first real acid test of sorts. She would now step out of residency races, and go into open company and into graded for the first time. The Gr2 in Saratoga was chosen as her test. With some other hard knocking fillies at the time, CK Blurred Cat was still sent off the favorite. Breaking 6 th by 3 lengths this time, CK Blurred Cat ran one of those young 2 yr old races that you just can't explain. She never got into the bridle and finished the race a lackluster 8 th . Docoz studied the race and decided to go forward, not backwards off that effort. He knew she was to good a filly to shy away from now. Her next start would be of great importance. Docoz decided to not only put her back into graded company, but was also going to send her 8f for the first time. Many 2 yr olds can be divided into 2 categories. Fast below 8f, or coming late at 8f. Hard to have a young horse that can do both. Docoz, knowing that the rest of the years big races were route races, had to see if she could handle the distance jump and revert back to her winning form. The target would be the Gr3 Chicago Lassie. In the full 14 horse field, CK Blurred Cat would break 3 rd by 1 length. As they rounded the far turn, jock Y Dunbar wanted to get the jump on the field. He asked her a bit earlier than normal, as now CK Blurred Cat had the lead as they cam off the turn. She widened her margin through the stretch and won by 1 ¾ lengths. She was now a black type winner like her mommy. Her 93 speed number was the highest juvenile filly number to date. So maybe a rest was in order? Nope, Docoz would get while the getting was good. He would now send CK Blurred Cat in the GR1 Frickazee stakes. It would be her toughest start in terms of competition yet. The likes of Forty Corinthians, Pejorative T, Issa, Tizkauf and A.P. Jordan were to lineup for the race as well. In the 14 horse field, Ck broke her usual close to the pace 4 th , by 3 lengths. Content to stay unhurried down the backside, jockey B. Child sat patiently and with 4f to go, nudged CK Blurred Cat into contention. As they turned for home, Isssa was fighting on the rail, Forty Corinthians was making a bold charge in between them both. The stretch run was close, but CK used her class and more importantly, her athleticism, to edge clear of Forty Corinthians by a 1 ¼.   Docoz was besides himself. She had earned a Gr1 victory and was on her way to a BB race. Her victory earned her an outstanding 95 speed number.

CK Blurred Cat emerged as the division leader now, and now the question would be whether CK Blurred Cat would even go to the BB Filly race. She will have had 5 races in 4 months if she were to enter. Docoz decided to let the filly let him know. If she came up sharp, she was going. If not, oh well, the horses interest comes first.

I did the write-up for the BB Juvenille filly and Docoz stated: CK Is sharp. She will be my first BB entrant and my first million dollar winner if she can get the job done. Docoz had high hopes and felt confident that she could win.

The BB Juvenille Filly race was at hand. Contested on the synthetics of California, there was a horse that CK had not faced yet. That horse was Hard Indian. The 2 had not yet crossed paths on the way to the BB. In 6 races, Hard Indian had not finished worse than 2 nd and was the victor of the Gr1 Darley. CK would also get challenges from Fort Corinthians, Dad All Heart, Confectionary, Captain Awesome and Shorty Long. The field was incredibly solid. 8 graded winners and 5 graded placed horses were vying for championship honors.

The public made CK Blurred Cat the favorite, with Forty Corinthians 2 nd choice and Hard Indian 3 rd choice.   The anxious moments were over, it was now post time.

As the bell rang and the gates opened, Issa, a tenacious speedball, was going to make sure the fractions were honest up front. Ck Blurred Cat breaking from the outside 14 post, broke forwardly in 5 th , 3 lengths off the lead. To her inside was Hard Indian, a ¼ length in front. Forty Corinthians sat just in front of those 2. The 3 best jockeys in the world were all eyeballing each other going into the first turn. The 3 horses got into a comfortable flow down the backstretch, but continued to keep a close eye on the other 2. The winner of this race may be determined on who gets the perfectly timed jump. Forty Corinthians backed out a bit with 4f to go. It was Hard Indian and Ck Blurred Cat starting to both make forward moves. Neither one of them giving way. As they battled to the top of the stretch, the 84,000 people stood to see this stretch showdown.   K.Ledwith was whipping left handed, H. Harzheim was going right handed on Hard Indian. As they came to the 1/8 th pole, Ck Blurred Cat edged clear and won by 2 ¼ lengths.   In 1 :43 seconds, Docoz had his first million dollar horse, and his first BB winner with his only lifetime entrant. A long 8 month campaign was over and CK Blurred Cat emerged as a star and the division leader. An early retired mommy was back in Kentucky smiling. CK Blurred Cat earned a 95 speed number for her effort and missed the stakes record by 1/5 th of a second.

CK Blurred Cat finished her season off with, you guessed it, a residency restricted race in which she won by 2 ¼ lengths and earned a 99 speed figure. And beware, her next start might be another residency race called the Equinics. So the end of the year stats for this remarkable filly:

•  Faced 111 horses and only 7 finished ahead of her (and that was her only loss)

•  Won at 4 different distances and 8 different tracks

•  2 for 2 on off tracks

•  Has the stakes record for the Gr1 Frickazee stakes and 4 speed numbers over 93.

As of this writing, CK Blurred Vision has not been bred to yet. But beware; the retired mare may have thoughts of a 2 yr old champion and 3 yr old champion next year.

Much congratulations to CK Blurred Cat and Docoz for her outstanding season. The Sim awaits her 3 yr old season.
