A Thoroughly Preposterageous Year On The Track
By- Hawkz
First of all congratulation to all those who were nominated for this very evenly contested grade of 2yrold Turf Colt. Come the 1st of January we all start to breed our 2-year-olds and dream that we have that one horse who will shine out above all other and be the champion 2yrold of his or her year. And the winner is PREPOSTERAGEOUS(ENG) a stunning chestnut colt by the sire who is producing plenty of winners in top company MEDICEAN(GB) who also produced another G1 2yrold colt MEAN DICE(ENG). His damsire is also a top sire and damsire with a winning percentage of 56.6% as a damsire and 76.5% as a sire that is DANEHILL DANCER(IRE). Complementing those top sires is one of the best turf dams damsires ROBERTO who figures in the top line of many top sim winners. Bred 4x5 NORTHERN DANCER and 4x5 HAIL TO REASON means he will not lack in stamina and should be expected to run further than the mile he ran last time in his 3yrold career. Look for him in the classic races this season.
PREPOSTERAGEOUS(ENG) is trained by a friend of many of us who frequent the chat room and forum otistaylor stable group who has been playing for a few years now. Still I'm pretty sure even Otis Taylor didn't think he had a horse this good. Who could? We all hope but never think we really will live that dream .
Another of his class runners is the now 4yrold G1-Eclipse Stakes winner CERTIFIABLY INSANE(IRE) by DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) he is a member of the Blazing Saddles residency. This colt is from his jetersring stable which is a newish stable having only produced 144 runners for 26 winners a 18% win percentage. Here is a trainer going places. Ha to think I once used to give him advice on breeding. Now I need to keep quiet and start listening.
PREPOSTERAGEOUS(ENG) has raced 7 times, winning 6 of them and finishing 2 nd in the other and accumulating a whopping $2,809,000 in earnings. His first outing was in California in a restricted owners turf stakes over 6f which he won over a 17 strong field in a 68sp late in February. He was then turned out for long spell of ten weeks. I take some pride in the success of this horse as before this start I wrote a BTB article on his first race I wrote " Jetersring Stables colt by MEDICEAN (GB) x DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) x ROBERTO wow arguably the best bred horse in race as far as turf goes definitely reeks of class and what beats him wins."
He was then bought back to racing in New York in The NOBLE SWORD Stakes 7.5f when he won well after trailing the leader till the turn and kicking on to win by nearly two length 80sp it must have at this stage that his trainer thought he had a horse that could go on to better things.
Given six weeks to recover, otistaylor dropped him back in distance to 6f for The Coventry Steaks-G2 where he lead all the way for another stylish win in a 82sp in Berkshire England.
Rested another six weeks, he was off to Victoria, Australia for a run in the G2-The Champagne Mile defeating GW's BLACK GOLDNINER(JPN) and FUSAICHI ZOMBIE(JPN) trailing the leader and just getting up by a head to win in an 83sp and a time of 1:37 2/5
Showing his versatility, he was switched back to 6f for his next race also in Victoria in The Golden Shoe-G1 beating a great field which included six other GW's including MEAN DICE(ENG) .for this race kiddman wrote " PREPOSTERAGEOUS , a wonderfully-named scratch-bred colt by Medicean out of a Danehill Dancer mare (Gee... Where have I heard THAT before?), battled tooth-and-nail against multiple rivals every step of the way to win the Champagne Mile last out, so toughness is not an issue here. If that tough race didn't take all the starch out of this jetersring -trained colt, he'll be tough at 5/1 today, also. The move back to sprinting is probably appreciated, too."
Then, befitting a horse with that record, it was back to the USA for the Breeders' Bowl Juvenile Turf-G1 where he ran second to BLACK GOLDNINER(JPN) handy all the way he just lacked the finish on the day to get the win but still ran the mile in 1:35 and a 97sp. I wrote the BTB article for this race I asked Otis when he knew he had a classy horse he replied " Hawkz... I knew I had a good horse when your preview said he was the one to beat in the 17 horse CC stakes field... He has shown great heart in all his races since then... Even though I am pretty sure 8f is not his favorite distance I decided he had earned a chance to run on the sim;s biggest day... I hope he gives a good showing... Thanks for your confidence way back in the beginning... " my comments for the Breeders Bowl were " Otistaylor Stables trained colt ranked #3 turf classic beautifully bred by the sire of the moment MEDICEAN (GB) x DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) x ROBERTO has raced 5 times for 5 wins and $2,259,000 a great record started out winning a residency run Stakes race over 6f 68sp second up won The NOBLE SWORD Stakes 7.5f 80sp then The Coventry Steaks-G2 6F 82sp leading all the way and winning in fine style his only start over a mile produced a win in The Champagne Mile-G2 83sp winning by a head and last time out won The Golden Shoe-G1 6f 91sp He has shown great heart in all his races since then... Even though I am pretty sure 8f is not his favourite distance I decided he had earned a chance to run on the sims biggest day... I hope he gives a good showing... Thanks for your confidence way back in the beginning..." on breeding and his one run at a mile he should handle it again if he does win number 6 will be chalked up.
Once again he was rested for six weeks and finished the season off in style taking out the DPCD VIII Epiphany Too Handicap -G1 8f by one and a half lengths 100sp in Maryland once again trailing the leaders and out sprinting them in the stretch a style that seems to suit this top horse.
Mark down 3 G1's 2 wins and a 2 nd ,2 G2's 2 wins and its not hard to see why this is the 2yrold turf colt for 2009. I bet we would all love to have one as good this season. Im not sure where his trainer will be aiming next but most MEDICEAN (GB) only get better with a bit of age and over ground . So expect to see this excitement machine fighting it out in the 3yrold turf classic's in 2010.
Congratulations once again to the three other contenders for this category but a worthy winner of 2yrold colt turf is PREPOSTERAGEOUS(ENG). Good luck Otistaylor whereever you take him in 2010 I bet you are over the moon I know I would be.
