Alberta T may serve as springboard
This Saturday's 6 1/2 furlong $70,000 Alberta T Stakes in Indiana just might be the type of race that hints that a young three year old filly is turning the corner and looking for more of a challenge as her career progresses. The race is named after TCOPYRIGHT's homebred Group II and six time stakes winning mare of $433,239. With a mid week blizzard blowing down off Lake Michigan the race was only able to draw a field of four as others' travel arrangements had to be canceled. The field of four from the rail out.
#1 New Moon Rising(Ky) - SPQR2ND - N Armstrong - 6/5... 3yo daughter of Distorted Humor-Awesome Again arrives from Boston having won four of eight lifetime for earnings of $142,000 and has only missed a placing once. Solid barn houses six stakes winners and a 21% win rate for Winterfell Racing from GR Simsters residency. Won the $50,000 Scafell Pike AZ Challenge in last after placing a solid 5th in the Gr I DPCD VIII Thxmsslew Handicap. Look for her to be sharp and lively as her racing career begins to round into form.
#2 Special Sky(Jpn) - TIGEREYES - L Huhn - 3/2... Daughter by Special Week- Danzig is by dam Orphidian Sky, who has dropped stakes winners Orphidian Spawn and Obsidian Spy, along with stakes placed Midnight Mile. Has won two of ten lifetime stabled at Queensland Racecourse for Nextbonus Racing. A dangerous threat to the top choice as she exits a few tough allowance fields that held multiple stakes placed fillies. Lone stakes try landed her a 3rd in a field of five that included three stakes winners. Has dangerous pace stalking ability as does the one to her inside.
#3 War Buckeye(Ky) - DREAMYD - K Collins - 9/2... From the first crop of speed freak War Pass who has sired two stakes winners sprinting. Exits a Florida maiden score at todays distance and finds a small field for her initial stakes attempt. DREAMYD, part of Legendary Stables from GR Simsters, could be up for a good weekend as they also have Wild Mesa going in the Rotten Well Challenge in nearby Ohio.
#4 Drown The City(Tx) - CHIACOLA - R Stacy - 4/1... Part of Teejay Racing Stables from Universal Racing Club, this daughter of Too Much Bling-Smoke Glacken has won half of her six starts for $92,000. A very easy winner at 1-9 last out in Maryland's Ruckus Smuggling Challenge. Her two prior races showed her on big improvement. December 19th she ran a field best speed number (91) running against colts in the IHM Rockets Memorial. Skeptics will be inclined to think the sloppy track may have helped with that effort. I for one am thinking she is the main threat of this race and at 4-1 holds much value.
A short field goes to post and it will be interesting to see how the early pace shapes up. New Moon Rising and Special Sky will have to keep an eye on one another in the early stages as not to let the other get to far ahead. That may set it up for the stalking War Buckeye or the deep threat Drown The City. I will take Drown The City as my lone selection in this short contentious field.
