Rivals Meet Again in Grade 1
Welcome to Beautiful Queensland Park for the historic running of the Grade I Adelaide Derby on a firm track over a mile and a half. We have a great day for racing with 9 strong competitors ready to run in this great race. This year’s race, as always, is for the 3 year olds and these horses are running for the $300,000 winner’s share of the half million dollar purse and the glory that comes with winning this race. Without further ado, lets take a look at the field.
Starting out of the 1 hole will be Individually from the cozzene99 stable. This son of Big Brown will be doing what every horse in the field will be doing, running the longest race of his life. This colt comes in off the best race of his life at the longest distance of his life by wiring a 10 furlong open allowance last time out. This seems like quite the jump in class and hopefully this horse will have the class to make it. He was running away from the field in all 3 of his victories so he should be able to handle the distance.
Running from the 2 spot is our 5/2 favorite Weinhard from the larsonisti stable. This is one impressive horse, having yet to finish out of the money in 10 career starts. This son of Holy Bull is coming off two straight Graded victories, winning the Grade III Force Stakes and the Grade II Griffen in his last two outings. Weinhard has broken the 100 mark in his last 3 races, including an impressive 106 speed figure. This colt’s only trouble seems to be when he heads to the front too quickly. The best chance would be if he can lie back a little and then strike. This is a really nice horse who can definitely win this if he can strike at the right moment.
Dwarf from the grrm2 stable is moving from the 3 post in this race. The son of Dynaformer has not yet raced against Stakes Company, but still comes out at a nice 6-1 price. This will be the first race of this colts 6 race career that wasn’t actually set up by his connections. This nice looking colt has won twice at 10 furlongs in his last two times out and is coming off a career best 96 sp#. Dwarf looks like his best opportunity is to stay very slightly off the pace and then creep by the leader as the race goes on. This is a well bred horse who should be right in the thick of things.
The #4 horse is the strangest story of the race. Classical Mike from the dogfarm stable is a son of Big Brown. Dogfarm is the 2nd owner of this colt who just ran the best race of his life with a 99 speed figure in an allowance. Earlier this year this horse was running in a 7500 Maiden Claimer. He was picked up and is now running in a Grade I. Congratulations on this pickup. This race may be a bit long, as this horse has never run longer than a mile and a sixteenth. Still, anytime you can make that type of jump, you have got to be happy. At 12-1, it is definitely worth a shot.
Performance Art out of the kevoman3 stable will be heading from the #5 slot. This New Approach colt will be making a big leap up from the allowance ranks to the highest grade. This brown colts best has been at his longest distances, going 11 furlongs, and the extra distance should help. While this horse hasn’t ran quite the same speeds as most of the others here, leading to the 15-1 odds, you have got to like the trend of going increasing distances and getting better results recently.
In the 6 hole we have an interesting looking 6-1, in tejanoruns’ colt Corin out of Arch. This will be only the 2nd start on the turf for this colt, but will also be the colts 2nd graded run on the grass. Last time out, this colt ran a blistering 101 speed figure , tying his career best, in his first run on grass in a 2nd place finish in the Grade III Derby Trail. This horse should be good for the distance, as he seems to love to come from behind.
Vulcanic is our 2nd favorite at 7-2 and this Encosta De Lago colt hails from the slowhand stable. Slow is the last thing I would use to describe this guy, as he has twice run 103 figures. His last time out he beat Corin in the Derby Trail and this is another closer who should love the distance. This is one horse who will not be stepping up in class, as he is already a multiple time Graded winner. I would expect Vulcanic to be charging the front when this is all said and done.
Bravest of All from the lasthope1 stable will be heading out from the 8 post. This Falbrav colt goes off at 9-2 and will be looking for his 2nd graded victory. He was beat by a few other horses in this race last time out in the Derby Trail, but this horse will want revenge. Expect this horse to take the early lead and try to hang on for victory
On the outside we have 8-1 Trespassing from the shamrandk stable. This son of Agnes Tachyon will be trying to best his career best 99 speed figure when he finished 3rd in the Derby Trail last time out. This colt isn’t really a closer, but more of a stalker and I would expect the same type of performance this time out.
This race looks to be a great run for several rival horses. This should definitely be exciting racing, but I am going to take the chalk here. Weinhard for the win, Vulcanic to place and Bravest of All for the show.
