Two year old fillies vye for those all-important stakes points
Race coverage return to Virginia in time to see two year old fillies grab for those all important stakes points in this week's Mixed Signals(FR) Stakes. This is the second annual running of this race for two year old fillies, set to run over six furlongs of turf, which willl be rated as firm for the event.. Along with the stakes points, there is a $30000 ourse up for grabs.. The odds on favorite dominated last year's running, with Lucky's Marieromping to a three length victory, posting a 77.55 speed.. This year's race draws a short field of four fillies, mostly well matched.. Oddsmakers chose a 3/5 favorite, backed by a pair at 2/1 and 5/2 odds.. A 26/1 logshot rounds out the field.
PP 1) Noe Valley(KY). Sired by More Than Ready, Trained by socalman.. Noe Valley makes her fourth start here, bringing a 1-1-1 record to the table.. She's been steadily improving with each start, posting a career high 69.3 speed in her last start.. This will be her second try on turf.. She held on well in her last turf try, settling in right where she wanted to be, but unable to pick up the pace to gain any ground in the second half.. The switch back to turf may have been prompted by a steady fade in a front loaded field in her last start.. Her sire More Than Ready tends to be stronger on dirt, but still has bit of a turf upside,. If she can improve her speed another notch, she could be right in the mix, but the composition of the field doesn't favor her here, with early speed out front and a good closer behind.. Though I see a good future for her, I'll have to pass on her here.
PP 2) Downtown Bimbo. Sired by Speightstown, Trained by sandiego.. Downtown Bimbo puts her perfect record on the line here in her fourth start, with her first try on the grass.. She was a dominant force in her first three on dirt, with a length and a quarter being the closest anyone has come to her.. Her speeds have been excellent, as well, impriving with each start and posting a very nice 78.3 in her last.. The switch to turf puzzles me a bit here, especially with her sire Speightsdown not a strong force on the grass, though Distorted Humor on the dam side is about 50/50 through his female lines.. But the short field here is a good a place as any to see if she has the versatility.. She's been at or near the front in each of her first three, and has proven herself very hard to catch, even with an extra furlong over what she faces here in her last two.. If she shows the same speed she did in her last, she'll be tough to beat here.. Even if she drops five points on the grass, she still has four points on the next best speed in this field.. A solid bet here at 2/1 odds.
PP 3) Hennigan's Scotch(KY). Sired by Kingmambo, Trained by wrecked.. Hennigan's Scotch jumps to stakes after a win in her maiden debut last out.. Though she ran a nearly picture perfect race in her debut, her choice as the overwhelming favorite here is more likely based on her regal high end breeding.. That being said, her first start was on a premium Class A track, and she posted a 68.3 speed in what is typically a tentative race, being a first start. Relatively speaking, she closed alot of ground in a five and a half furlong race, and her breeding should give her more than enough stamina to duplicate the feat at this distance or even longer.nbsp; With the very good speed up front, she could find herself deeper out at the half here, but I think she has the class to make a race of it as they head down the stretch.
PP 4) No Me Gusta(NE) Sired by Blumin Affair, Trained by reaper519.nbsp; No Me Gusta takes her fourth trip here, behind putting up a win and a place after switching to turf in her second start. Her speeds have been a bit marginal, topping out at 59.4, putting her at a distinct disadvantage here. She got her victory last out on a yeilding track, managing to keep her head out front, but on firm turf, she couldn't hold on late at a shorter distance than she faces here. She is likely to force the pace in the very early going here, but unless she hiding alot more speed somewhere under her saddle, she's not going to last long. I wish her luck here, put not going to put my money on it here, een at those juicy 26/1 odds.
