A field of Sixteen First Time Starting Two-Year Old’s enter the Big Apple starting gate for the final leg of the Summer Racing Series.  The race will be run at Seven Furlongs over the Turf Course.

MOSTLY RED STARS – the 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Sea The Stars out of the stakes winning/multi stakes producing mare LADY ELIZABETH (Lemon Drop Kid) makes his long awaited debut for the kingab racing stables; Sea the Stars, already the number 5 rated sire overall in the SIM, has been bred to five  Lemon Drop Kid game mares, two of which are stakes winners, all winners on the Turf; the Dam, a Dirt specialist herself, has produced one Turf stakes winner from her four stakes winning offspring; this one should excel over the Turf Course despite his prominent Dirt influence…must consider

POINTS OF LITE – the deeprock trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Point of Entry is the first offspring from the mare RICK’S COMMITMENT (North Light); Point of Entry has been sent to 2 North Light game mares, this will be the first runner to hit the track; Dam had an unheralded racing career winning just 1 of 19 starts and is reflected in the 22-1 morning line odds…would surprise

GO AWAY IN MAY – a private purchase from the irisharse racing stables, the 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Temple City out of the stakes placed/ stakes producing mare FITTING FINALE (Montjeu) has a very prominent turf pedigree and is well-placed in her debut; Temple City has been bred to three other Montjeu game mares, all winners, one a stakes winner;  the filly’s sibling, QUALLY FAMOUS, was a stakes winner over the Turf Course and finished 4th in the 2016 nine furlong G1 Equinics Turf…chance at a price

HIT IT JAYMZ – the ace trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Hit It A Bomb is the first offspring from the mare ARCH PUNKIN (Arch), winner of just one race in eight career starts; the second-year sire has produced one stakes winner from his 100 offspring; this is the first horse bred from the Hit It A Bomb X Arch breeding nick…if you like longshots

CHOCOLATE MOUNTAIN – the second of four fillies entered into this field, this a 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Adlerflug out the stakes producing mare CHANGO (Dansili); the GER-bred makes her debut for the nextbonus racing stables, a trainer who, by my last count, owned and bred five of the top seven Adlerflug runners in the SIM; Adlerflug has been bred to eight Dansili game mares, all winners, one a stakes winner sprinting on the turf; connections have the magic touch with this sire, so beware…hocus pocus

YOUR OWN NATURE – the spinround racing stables have anxiously awaited the debut of this 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Frankel, the first offspring from the modest racing mare SOUL POSSESSION (Oasis Dream); Frankel has been bred to six Oasis Dream game mares, all winners, two that have recorded stakes victories, all six are winners over the Turf Course; these are the kind you wait for half the year to pass before you put them on the racetrack…the time has come

DEEPBEASTdesignated as the morning line favorite is the bristolred trained 2-Year Old scratch-bred Bay Colt by Deep Impact out of a Nureyev x Fappiano mare; Deep Impact, the leading active SIM sire, has been scratch-bred to Nureyev twenty-seven times, producing six graded winners, six stakes winners, and another three graded/group placed runners; that’s a better than 50% chance that this Colt is destined to exceed the Allowance level…at first asking

CHURCH ON SUNDAY – the scratch-bred 2-Year Old Brown Colt by Americain out of a Miswaki x Sunday Silence mare will make his racing debut for the dennisshaffer racing stables; Americain, the winners of the 2010 Melbourne Cup, has been scratch-bred to Miswaki on three previous occasions, all winners, one with earnings exceeding $250k; connections make their ESR racing debut…first time is a charm

WHAT A SCOOCH – why do I think frankster named this one for his wife, for those wondering, if an Italian calls you a scooch, they are referring to you as, well, pain in the neck; this 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Into Mischief, out of the stakes winning/stakes producing mare LETSGETSERIOUS (Encosta De Lago), the filly hopes to live up to her name while performing on the racetrack; the breeding nick of Into Mischief  to Encosta De Lago game mares has been replicated twice producing a stakes winner… rompicoglioni

STAR SHEIKH – making his racing debut for the casino racing stables is the 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Dubawi, the first foal of the stakes winning mare STARWAY EXPRESS (Sea the Stars), 2yo debut winner of the ESR Arkle Maiden with over $250k in career earnings; Dubawi, the 8th leading active SIM sire, has been previously bred to eight Sea the Stars game mares, all Allowance winners including one stakes winner; connections have high hopes for this one, and why not…major player

ALYA – the namesake 2-Year Old scratch-bred Bay Filly by Awtaad out of a Seattle Slew x NijinskyII mare makes her racing debut for the valesa racing stables; the second-year sire has already produced a graded winner from his 80 offspring and is the first time he has been bred to Seattle Slew in the Sim; you have to love the back-end breeding on this filly and maybe she will race as good as her trainer is kindhearted…keen interest here

CONTRIBUYENTE – the ivanyamil trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Contributor, out of the stakes producing mare MATERIA GRIS (Smart Strike), daughter of the G1 winning EVELIN, makes his racing debut in the ESR Summer Series; Contributor, winner of the G1 Chipping Norton Stakes and G1 ATC Ranvet Stakes in AUS, , is off to a fast start as a SIM sire in the 2018 season, recording two stakes winners in this young season; this is the first time in the SIM that Contributor has been sent to a Smart Strike mare…the jury is still out

QUIET LITTLE WAR – the trotter1 trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Declaration of War is out of the G1 winning/multi graded stakes producing mare QUIET LITTLE DRINK (Seeking the Gold), winner of the 7-furlong G1 Frank Dettori Stakes on the Turf; Declaration of War has visited four Seeking the Gold game mares, all Allowance winners including a stakes winner; easily the best producing mare in my barn, there is a great deal of anticipation in this Colt’s racing debut…will there be joy in Mudville on Saturday

NAVAJO FORCE- the nycowboy trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Karakontie out of a modest running mare DONA ANA (Oasis Dream) hopes to surpass the accomplishments of his older siblings, and a win here on Saturday would put him right at the top of the list, the third-year sire has produced four stakes winners including two graded winners; Karakontie has been bred to just one Oasis Dream mare producing a low level claimer, however the winner of the 2014 Breeders Cup Turf Mile should be respected at stud until proven otherwise…interesting sire

SPIRIT TURTLE – the aladar trained 2Year Old scratch-bred Bay Colt by Sebring out of an El Gran Senor x Stop the Music mare hits all the marks of that throwback pedigree that was so successful on the racetrack years ago; Sebring, a Champion Australian 2YO colt, has been scratch-bred to El Gran Senor on one previous occasion, a winner of over $100k; I can’t help but to expand my imagination when I see El Gran Senor in the bloodlines, the sire of the great 2002 Broodmare of the Year, Toussaud…thanks for the memories

FOUR BET CADET – the buzz along the backstretch is for the cadet trained 2 Year Old Bay Colt by Golden Horn out of the G1 winning HEADS UP CADET (Dubawi), winner of the G1 NY Island Cap; Golden Horn, winner of the 2015 Cartier Champion 3 year-old colt and 2015 Cartier Horse of the Year, has been bred to six Dubawi game mares, all winners, one stakes placed; while it may be too soon to tell what kind of SIM sire Golden Horn will be, one thing is for sure, when you breed a world class sire to a world class runner, odds for a top racer will be in your favor…one to beat

Handicapping the Field

Breed the best to the best, that’s what the experts tell you.  I don’t necessarily subscribe to that train of thought, but when it comes to handicapping unraced 2yo’s, well that’s just the best logic I can apply.

DEEPBEAST certainly gets the highest marks amongst the scratch-bred entries.  The SIM’s number one sire bred to a Nureyev x Fappiano mare needs no justification at all, but if you need one, just look at the past results that this pedigree has produced.

There are a few runners in this field that are bred to some of the top game mares, top racing mares, or both.  QUIET LITTLE WAR is the son of a G1 winner that has produced three graded winners and four other stakes winners.  FOUR BET CADET is a son of the great G1 winning HEADS UP CADET.

WHAT A SCOOCH is out of a stakes winning/stakes producing mare, while MOSTLY RED STARS hails from a mare that has produced four stakes winners.

CHOCOLATE MOUNTAIN is out of a stake’s producing mare, but it is the success of her trainer with this sire that has caught my attention.

GO AWAY IN MAY is very Turf influenced both on the Sire and Dam side and is a dangerous longshot.

I know very little of ALYA ‘s sire but seems anything bred to Slew and Nijinsky should be able to run some.

I must remain cautious of such horses as YOUR OWN NATURE and STAR SHEIKH, both with sires that immediately catch your attention.

The Picks

DEEPBEAST – you must respect the pedigree

QUIET LITTLE WAR – Dam is a proven producer

FOUR BET CADET – he best to the best
