Welp, we gave it our best shot in the BB Turf Juvenile but my boy TURN EM’ LOOSE came up well short. As much as I’m disappointed in the performance I came away encouraged that one of my horses found its way into one of the more prestigious races. Overall it wasn’t a very good week as I found myself putting horses in bad spots and hoping for the best.  While it’s easy to say all of this in hindsight this mistake alone has haunted me in my first year and something I need to improve upon. I imagine being a bit more patient with my horses and looking for suitable spots for improvement is something I’ll get better at as time goes on.

Next week looks like an interesting week as some of my more recently bred horses come back to the track for their second attempt at breaking the maiden.

Weekly Record: 41-4-4-5

Weekly Win = 9.7%

ITM % = 31.7%

Last Weeks’ Watch List:

UNTAMED KINGDOM (ANIMAL KINGDOM x PLEASANT COLONY x SHARPEN UP) – After breaking the maiden going a mile on the turf she’d come back to try those same conditions against winners. She got out early and had the lead at the top of the stretch but ultimately got run down finishing 2nd by 1.5 lengths.

TURN EM’ LOOSE (CARAVAGGIO x WRITTEN TYCOON (AUS) x KINGMAMBO) – I came in with tempered expectations for my one and only BB runner this weekend and it’s a good thing I did because he didn’t run a lick. He has a deep closing style and ran by a couple down the stretch but was never really in the race. He’d finish 12th by 11 lengths.

ROBIX (HARD SPUN x ELUSIVE QUALITY x FOREST WILDCAT) – She’d give stakes company a shot for the first time this week. I had a feeling going in that I gave her way too much distance trying 6.5 furlongs and that was proven true as she lost ground in the stretch and finished 6th by about 4 lengths.

IMPULSE TO SWEAR (SWEAR (AUS) x FRAC DADDY x DYNAFORMER) – After running very well with high level claimers I reached a little too far sending her out against stakes runners. It also didn’t help that she was trying two turns for the first time as well. Any who, she’d run 11th finishing 9 back and came out of the race very tired. She’ll get a bit of an extended break before she comes back to the track.

MAGNETIC MOON (MALIBU MOON x STREET CRY x STORM BIRD) – I thought the added distance to 7.5 furlongs was going to be very beneficial for him, but as it would turn out I was incorrect. He’d finish 5th by 5.5 lengths against allowance NW2L’s. I think 7 furlongs may be the sweet spot so I’ll try that in his next.

Studs:

UNIVERSITY TB (STANFORD x CURLIN x DAMASCUS) – He’s out of the stakes winning TEST SHOT but hasn’t looked anywhere near as talented as his momma to this point. Despite that he managed to get a victory this week against 50K maiden claimers going 5.5 furlongs on the turf. He may get one more race as a 2 year old before year’s end but I’ll play it by ear.

ZENNZ (ZENSATIONAL x DEPUTY MINISTER x RUBIANO) – Also given the drop to claimers this week and performed better finishing 2nd by less than a length going 5.5 furlongs against 60K maiden claimers. She posted a 71 speed fig which was much improved and I’ll more than likely give her a bit more in distance next out.

CAIRO ROAD (CAIRO PRINCE x QUALITY ROAD x DANEHILL DANCER) – Out of Bizall’s REDEEMING DOLLARS he’s already looking better than momma and at least one of his brothers after his 8.5 furlong victory this week. He posted a 90 speed fig which was extremely nice to see and I’m willing to be he can handle more distance.

ISPEIGHT (SPEIGHTSTER x SMARTY JONES x ICEBOX) –  Out of Oldmoonfarmseli’s ICE BOX DANCER he hadn’t shown much of anything till this week. That being said he was dropped to the lowest level of claimers at a mile and ran a 71 speed fig in a 2nd place effort that saw him lose by a head.

SKY DIVEN NAKED (MOSLER x FORTY NINER x TOPSIDER) – Slowly but surely he’s getting better and better. This week saw him improve the speed fig to an 82 in which he finished second by less than a length against maiden 45K’s. I’ll probably give him a little more distance in his next to see if that gets him his first victory.

WAR MAESTRO (WAR FRONT x SMART STRIKE x UNBRIDLED’S SONG) – He tried a mile on the dirt for the second consecutive week and it garnered the same result as his last out; 3rd place and a 79 speed fig. That makes three 3rd place finishes in a row in as many tries leaving me to scratch my head on what my next move with him will be.

HONORED SOCIETY (CALIFORNIA CHROME x DUNKIRK x MACHIAVELLIAN) – He gave a good performance this week but still couldn’t find his way into the winners circle. He’d finish 2nd by 1.5 lengths going a mile on the dirt and posted an 84 speed fig in the effort.

JOYFUL VICE (KITTEN’S JOY x ELA-MANA-MOU x VICE REGENT) – Ran with ESR company in the first leg of the Queen of the Turf Challenge back in October and was handled easily. She was brought back this week on a cut in distance from a mile to 6.5 furlongs and run against maiden 56K’s. This time around it was her who won easily wiring the field by 2 lengths.

Duds:

THE MARVELOUS ONE (ITSMYLUCKYDAY x A.P. DELTA x STREET HERO) – He tried 2 miles but never really got going as he’d finish 5th by 10 lengths. He’s still posting speed figs in the 80s but he struggles against the upper allowance runners. I’m going to give him a switch to turf to see if that gets him out of the 80s speed fig wise.

ROGUE ZIP (CITY ZIP x AFFIRMED x ICECAPADE) – He’s been a nice little runner but has now finished 4th for the 3rd time in a row. He’s had his best performances running at 6 furlongs and after this week’s 7.5 furlong sprint I’ll probably bring him back to the 6-6.5 furlong distance.

AMERICAN CHAOS (AMERICAN PHAROAH x WILD AGAIN x RAISE A NATIVE) – So he didn’t really care for the 6 furlong poly surface as the speed fig dropped to 60. This week saw him finish 9th by about 6 lengths. I’ll move him back to the dirt and cut the distance again in hopes that it improves his performance.

GENUINE OUTLAW (CURLIN x HARLAN’S HOLIDAY x UNBRIDLED’S SONG) -  She tried 8 furlongs against winners this week and I’m not really sure what happened when they hit the stretch as she’d lose 6 lengths. She’s been pretty good about closing from off the pace but this time she just didn’t have it. She finished 9th by 11 lengths posting up a 77 speed fig.

HOMEMADE SCOTCH (POINT OF ENTRY x EMPIRE MAKER x NUREYEV) – First time on the dirt the speed fig improved to 75 but the overall performance was about the same as she’d finish 6th by 10.5 lengths. Much like her momma (RICK NASH) I’m thinking she wants much more distance and I’ll probably wait till January before bringing her back to run.

CHEST CANDY (CANDY RIDE x HENNESSY x SEEKING THE GOLD) – She ran in the ESR My Day Will Come allowance event this weekend and performed admirably. Given all the crazy talented horses in ESR I didn’t imagine her winning but was hoping she’d find the money. Unfortunately she finished 4th by 7 lengths posting an 82 speed fig. I’ll keep running her at a mile on the dirt in her next.

IN WAVES (ORB x BIG BROWN x CURLIN) – I think running him at the allowance level has run its course with this week’s most recent 8th place finish. I think we will give turf a go in the next but I’m not anticipating a massive jump up in performance.

WAKE AND TAKE (WILL TAKE CHARGE x DEPUTY MINISTER x FORTUNATE PROSPECT) – Well he proved my suspicion this week that he might be distance challenged. After last week’s debut saw him lose ground in the stretch going 7.5 furlongs, I figured let I’d try him at a mile before I start cutting the distance. He’d go on to run 10th by 11 lengths. He’ll be back in the 5-6 furlong range in his next.

Watch List:

ULTRA SUNRISE (CURLIN x STORM CAT x A.P. INDY) – Out of BELLE TRUMPET this colt ran a very nice first race finishing 2nd by 2 lengths and posting an 82 speed fig in the debut. He’ll come back this week under the same conditions.

MINION OF WAR (WAR FRONT x A.P. INDY x ALYDAR) – Out of ALYZIG this son of WAR FRONT ran great in defeat in the debut posting an 85 speed fig in a 2nd place effort that saw him lose by a head. He will also come back under the same conditions in this upcoming week’s race.

STALK AND PREY (CLASSIC EMPIRE x GONE WEST x DANZIG) – Out of SMOKE LYNN she showed a nice little closing kick in her debut 5 furlong sprint in which she finished 2nd by a head. This week sees her get an extra furlong on the dirt.

BURSTING WITH JOY (KITTEN’S JOY x DYNAFORMER x SADLER’S WELLS) – Out of TK’s DYNAMO he ran a solid 3rd in the debut going a mile on the turf. He’s running a mile on the turf again this week but I’m almost certain he wants to go much further than that.
