We travel to Gulfstream Park in sunny Hallandale,  Florida for the featured Florida Derby – Derby Lock Prep.  The winner of this Grade 1 race earns a guaranteed spot in the starting gate for the Bluegrass Derby on the first Saturday in May.  A full field of fourteen three year old males will battle over nine furlongs (or ~ 1800 meters for the metric set) on what will be a fast dirt oval for the winner’s share of the $1.5M purse up for grabs.
.
There are three G2 winners and a G3 winner in the mix;  four stakes winners and half a dozen others with Bluegrass Derby dreams.  We have nine Kentucky breds and an Indiana bred,  with four overseas invaders seeking an upset.  We also have six returnees from the recent G2 Fountain Of Ute run here earlier this year.  The handicapper touts CRY ME SOME GOLD,  the G2 Fountain Of Ute runnerup from the jmadm barn,  as the narrow 6/1 morning line favorite,  followed by the undefeated GIANT’S CASH from the kashbarn group and G2 Fountain of Ute winner YANKEE PHAROAH from the naskippy stable at 7/1 odds.  This is a closely matched group,  so jockey tactics and racing luck will probably play important roles in determining the winner.
.
The Bluegrass Derby trail may come to an end for the also rans in this event;  those finishing near the top of the chart may still be dreaming late Saturday afternoon.  Let’s take a closer look at the field in post position order and see if we may divine the contenders and maybe even the winner from all those data points that thoroughbred handicappers try to use.

TOEWS                                                                KY     3M     bsben4     G Owans         11/1
.
Leading them out on to the race track is this Nyquist nipper,  based on the sim he-mare Breaking Bad M (by Into Mischief),  who exits a closing 3rd at 7.5 furlongs in the G2 Hutchingson Stakes over this oval,  smacking a 100 SP#.  Big bay colt showed good late foot one before that in the G3 The Legoland at a mile,  sticking a 98 SP#  from way back in the pack.  He closed out his 2018 campaign one back of that with a victory in the Tunaman listed stakes at 8 panels,  stabbing a 97 SP# with a nice late run.  Bsben4 trainee can save ground early from the rail,  and should appreciate the trip;  jockey will  need to work out a smooth trip to be a late factor in the lane.

 DOOMCRAG                                                    KY     3M     lenny15     Z Kentucky         9/1
.
The first of the “evil empire” entrants is this light grey colt,  who ran out of ground in latest,  the Our Tans listed stakes at a mile,  blasting a 105 SP# with a furious stretch run.  Scratch bred Tapit toughie (by Danehill),  got his 2019 season started with a late running 4th in a NW3L allowance at this distance,  bagging a 90 SP#.  He was 2nd best one back of that in the same condition at 8.5 panels,  banking a 92 SP# with his usual late foot.  Improving sort from the lenny15 barn should like the distance,  may get there with smooth jockey ride.  Handicapper gives him some love as the co-4th choice on the morning line.

ANNIVERSARIO                                          IRE     3M     pisanof     P Jackson         13/1
.
Boisterous bay colt tired badly late in the G2 Fountain Of Ute at this trip over this strip,  winding up last of fourteen with a 91 SP#.  His 2019 debut was a front running win in a hot race allowance at a mile,  getting an 82 SP# in a four horse affair.  Excelebration elf,  out of the G1 winning,  million dollar earning sim mare Carol Of The Bells (by Hennessy) closed out 2018 with a wire to wire score in a rez stakes at 8 furlongs,  garnering a 98 SP#.  May have bounced last out,  and should be a part of the early pace;  could hang on better here but distance questions remain for this pisanof protege.

 GIANT’S KASH                                             KY     3M     kashbarn3     B Scott             7/1
.
Undefeated brown colt from the kashbarn3 barn gets class test here in his initial graded stakes outing.  Giant’s Causeway guy,  out of the G1 winning sim mare Kash O’War (by War Front),  ran them all down last out from the difficult fourteen post in the Tabitha listed stakes at this distance,  crushing a 104 SP# in a mid pack run.  He won his first stakes try one back of that in the Magical Act listed at 7.5 panels,  crashing a 101 SP# from the back of the pack.  He finished off 2018 with a local bred allowance win at 7.5 furlongs,  copping a 95 SP# with his now usual late run.  Will certainly be one of the faves in the Bluegrass Derby with a win here;  the handicapper likes his chances as the co-second choice on the morning line.

FARAON LATINO                                      KY     3M     castillo         B Orazio         14/1
.
Blazing bay colt had a three race win skein end in his 2019 debut in the G1 Vermont Is For Lovers at this route,  producing a 96 SP# while showing a little late interest.  American Pharoah athlete,  out of the G3 winning sim mare Corazon Latino (by Giant’s Causeway),  got a stakes win in his first try in the Mary Wanna Smoke listed stakes at 8.5 panels,  popping a 100 SP# from back in the pack.  In his prior outing he got the money with a solid stretch run in an open allowance at a mile and a sixteenth,  pasting a 91 SP# in a mid pack run.  Runner from the castillo racing group may be fitter for this affair,  could get a piece of the purse on top try.

RYANS MOSS                                                AUS     3G     ozzy         H Ross             16/1
.
Blushing bay gelding got his sire’s first graded score with a flying finish in the G2 Hutchingson Stakes at 7.5 furlongs over this oval,  smoking a 103 SP# from way back in the pack.  Mossman mister,  out of the stakes placed sim mare Rusty Halo (by Polish Numbers),  flew home for 4th in the G3 The Happytime Stakes at 6 furlongs one back of that,  striking a 93 SP#  moving from last of eleven.  He got the money in his previous start in a NW3L allowance at three-quarters of a mile,  snaring a 91 SP# with his typical late run.  Runner from the ozzy barn of the rbokie24 racing group likes this racing surface and is one of the three G2 winners in this group;  stretches out here,  could surprise at juicy 16/1 odds.

ALL CAT NO HATTLE                             KY     3M     prfctdrift     K Proehl         9/1
.
The prfctdrift stable sends out this bruising bay colt,  who tired late to 5th in the G2 Fountain Of Ute at this route over this oval,  catching a 102 SP# in his 2019 season opener.  Tale Of The Cat tomcat,  out of the Eclipse award winning sim mare First Degree Bern (by Bernardini) was a good 3rd in the G1 Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile at 8.5 panels over a “good” track,  cashing a 100 SP# in a mid pack trip.  One before that he was 2nd best in the G1 End Of The Line Futurity at 8.5 furlongs,  casting a 94 SP# after prompting the early pace.  Should be fitter for his seventh straight graded stakes start,  looks like he might be part of the first flight;  could shake loose on the far turn and hold them off in the lane.

 SNEAKY SPIRIT LV                                 KY     3G     aussiebiz2     J Ledwith         12/1
.
Ghostly roan gelding tired to 11th in the G2 Fountain Of Ute last time over,  galloping to a 96 SP# after dueling on the front end through the far turn.  Scratch bred Ghostzapper grappler (by Halo) was an even 3rd one before that in the Boomtown Boy listed stakes at a mile,  gaining a 97 SP# in a stalking effort.  In his prior run he was 2nd in the Kristopher S listed at 8.5 panels,  grabbing a 97 SP# while part of the early pace.  Runner from the aussieblz2 stable of the bizalls racing operation should be near the front again,  but can he hold on down the straight ?

CRY ME SOME GOLD                            KY     3M     jmadm         V Gardner         6/1
.
The morning line favorite at 6/1 odds is this gleaming chestnut colt,  who closed from last of fourteen to get 2nd in the G2 Fountain Of Ute at this trip over this strip,  hammering a 107 SP# in his 2019 season opener.  Scratch bred Giant’s Causeway grappler (by Street Cry) stormed down the stretch to take the G2 Club Stakes at 8.5 furlongs,  hustling to a 103 SP# from next to last of fourteen.  One back of that he won the Cornfield County listed stakes at 8.5 panels,  hanging a 95 SP#.  Deep closer from the jmadm stable could bounce off big effort last out,  should be in the picture at the wire with similar run.

 ACCENTUATE                                               ENG     3M     woodsmen     D Evans         9/1
.
Frankel fellow,  out of the graded placed sim mare Fabled Iliyaburen (by Sea The Stars) picks a tough spot for first dirt outing.  Most recently,  he was 2nd in the G1 Vermont Is For Lovers at this distance,  drilling a 101 SP# from mid pack.  He ended 2018 with a 2nd in the Congo listed stakes at 8.5 panels in his prior try,  dropping a 99 SP# in a stalking effort.  He had no impact in the G1 Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Turf at a mile one before that,  drawing a 90 SP#.  Runner from the woodsmen racing operation takes a shot;  dam had some success on the dirt – hey,  you’ll never know unless you try.  Handicapper doesn’t dismiss him at 9/1 on the morning line.

IS THIS AMERICA                                    IN     3M     icantbreathe     V Webb          18/1
.
Roan colt steps up to graded company off a fast closing 2nd in the Journeyman listed stakes at this route,  throwing a 99 SP# from the back of the pack.  Unbridled America urchin,  out of the G2 winning sim mare Summer Brees (by Summer Bird),  won a local bred sprint allowance at 6 panels in his previous start,  tabbing an 81 SP# in a four horse field.  One before that he was a gaining 3rd in the Kristopher S listed at 8.5 furlongs,  tossing a 93 SP# moving from last of eleven early.  Runner from the icantbreathe racing group is another late runner who needs a good trip,  but others look tougher in this heat.

 YANKEE PHAROAH                                KY     3M     tarton14     I Thomas         7/1
.
The co-second choice of the handicapper is the G2 Fountain of Ute winner,  who closed from mid pack to win going away at this trip over this strip,  whacking a 109 SP#.  Scratch bred American Pharoah athlete (by Unbridled),  came home with a late rush to get 3rd in the G3 The Legoland at a mile in previous outing,  wrangling a 100 SP# after trailing early.  He closed out 2018 with a score in the Gulliver listed stakes at 8.5 furlongs,  working out a 96 SP# in a mid pack trip.  Stretch runner from the tarton14 barn of the naskippy racing group looks especially dangerous with repeat of last out performance.

.
The other half of the “evil empire” entry is this colossal chestnut colt,  who made his stakes debut last time over when 2nd in the Tabitha listed stakes at this distance,  flashing a 103 SP# from the back of the pack.  Gun Runner galloper,  out of the G1 winning,  million dollar earning sim mare Black Flag Flyer (by A.P.Indy),  won a NW2L allowance at this trip over this strip in his prior start,  flinging a 96 SP# in a mid pack try.  He was 2nd best one back of that in the same condition at 8.5 panels,  flipping a 93 SP# in his 2018 finale.  Runner from thethumb13 barn of the lenny271 racing conglomerate needs to work out a trip from difficult post;  likes this racing surface,  any improvement over last out should put him in the thick of things sprinting to the wire.

TOP OF THE MARKET                         NZ     3M     aabulb2yos     P Munoz         12/1
.
Watching them all exit the tunnel is this gregarious light grey colt,  who was an even 6th in the G2 Fountain Of Ute last out,  punching a 102 SP# in his first graded stakes outing.  Tavistock tabby,  out of the prodigious,  graded placed sim mare Oil On Top (by Unbridled’s Song),  closed with a rush to get 2nd in the Mary Wanna Smoke listed stakes at 8.5 panels in his prior run,  pounding a 99 SP# in his 2018 finale.  One back of that he was a nice 3rd in the Lake Shore Drive listed at a mile,  pegging a 91 SP# in a mid pack effort.  Runner from the aabulb2yos barn of the tyedye racing group must overcome the far outside barrier,  looks for revenge on some familiar foes.

SELECTIONS:    A case can be made for many of these runners,  but the handicapper’s top three look like the ones to beat.

So,  trying to beat them with a long shot,  here’s how the darts landed.

RYANS  MOSS                   – G2 winner over the track
