#11 Sleet Warning 9/1

Race Record – 5-3-0-1

Sleet Warning didn’t start running until April but boy did she come out running. She broke her maiden at first asking and won the Grade Two Vermont BB Juvenile Filly in just her second start. Trainer flagdown says he doesn’t usually rush his two year olds but he had a feeling she was special. She followed that up with an off the board finish in the Grade Two Hoserhead Juvenile Fillies against several runners she meets again here. After that she moved to a mile and easily won an allowance in August against four other runners with an 88 speed. Six weeks later she ran in the Grade One Frickazee Stakes, also at a mile and she ran third with an 89 speed. Trainer flagdown said “I don’t know if it was her best race per se, but her 3rd place in the Frickazee was an important gauge. Winning a grade race early is always nice, but it can also be a fluke. Even though she got beat in the Frickazee, her speed figure improved and it was nice to see she could hold her own in Gr I competition while stretching out.” Flagdown also mentioned that the three entries from the given stable group may be more primed than usual and he’ll be watching out for them.

Running Style -

Sleet Warning broke her maiden going wire to wire but her subsequent starts have seen her start in midpack early and close into the early leaders while holding off the late closers. In the Frickazee she was a bit further back than her two wins yet she still kept coming. If she can stay a bit closer early on she’ll be dangerous in this spot.

Pedigree -

Sleet Warning is a daughter of Frosted out of a Forty Niner x Seattle Slew mare. From thirteen foals that mare, Visions of Glory has produced two grade two winners, four listed winners and five stakes placed runners. Flagdown planned the breeding because “Frosted was a very nice horse that came along in the wrong year. This is the only breeding I have used him in, so I chose a mare that is a proven producer. I was hoping Forty Niner would add a little speed along with stamina (and maybe a little precociousness) and Slew would take care of the rest. So far it seems to have gone as planned.” There was a sleet warning in the area the night of her breeding and with a sire named Frosted Sleet Warning’s name was easily chosen.

#12 Apathetic Guru 7/1

Race Record – 6-5-0-0

The favorite in this race, Apathetic Guru comes in off a dominating win in her only route start. That was the mile and a sixteenth Grade Three Margarine Stakes which saw her win wire to wire by over two lengths with a 94 speed. It was her third graded stakes win, having taken two grade two sprints in the spring and early summer. Impressively she ran an 89 speed in June in the six and a half furlong Stoker Handicap. She followed that up with a HOT race prep for the Grade One Dell Computer Debutante at seven furlongs. That’s the only race she lost but she finished fifth there and was beat less than two lengths there. So the question bettors have here is whether that loss was due to the class jump and if it was will that matter if she is better as a router?

Running Style -

As mentioned she won her last start going wire to wire but the only other race that saw Apathetic Guru on the early lead was the Dell Computer Debutante. Prior to that she had been an early lead presser but had not gone to the front right from the get go. That versatility will help her here as there are several fillies who are going to gun straight for the front and this filly has the speed to run at them and the guts to go by them if she’s good enough.

Pedigree -

Apathetic Guru is a scratchbred daughter of Distorted Humor x Seattle Slew x Storm Cat.

#13 Millennium Gal 9/1

Race Record – 2-1-1-0

All of the fillies in this race have five or more starts. All that is except for Millennium Gal. Millennium Gal broke her maiden in July going seven and a half furlongs with a 78 speed. She didn’t return until late September when she ran second in the Grade Two Camlaw Stakes behind A.P. Kingdom who chose to skip this spot. Millennium Gal ran an 89 speed in that effort.

Running Style -

In her maiden Millennium Gal sat midpack before making an early move to the lead. She was a bit further back in the Camlaw but she closed from six lengths back at the stretch call to be beaten only a length and a half at the finish.

Pedigree -

Millennium Gal is a scratchbred daughter of Tapit x Dubai Millennium x Danzig.

#14 Skittlez 15/1

Race Record – 6-2-2-1

Skittlez showed early promise, breaking her maiden in January. She was given plenty of time between her early starts. She made her third start in a listed where she was second, beaten a quarter of a length before running third in the six furlong Grade Three Butterfly Futuryity in June. In August she stretched out to a mile and won an allowance very handily with an 83 speed. Most recently she was beaten a heartbreaking quarter of a length in the Grade One Walnut Tree Stakes over this track and distance. She moved up to a 90 speed, a very solid jump and should she move forward again in this spot she will be more of a threat than her 15/1 odds suggest.

Running Style -

Skittlez is a lower midpack runner. She has been ninth at the first call in her last four starts, all of which had double digit field sizes including two fourteen horse fields. She was a little further back by actual distance in her two route starts but she made solid moves in the second half of the race and exploded at the stretch call in both races. She’s obviously a better filly going a mile and beyond than she is sprinting and could be very dangerous in this spot.

Pedigree -

Skittlez is a daughter of Tapizar out of a Silver Charm x Storm Cat mare. She is the second foal from the mare Seattle Skittles whose first foal is a stakes placed son of Frosted. Second dam Storm Over Seattle was a graded placed stakes winning mare who produced two grade three winners and three listed stakes winners.

Congratulations to all the trainers who made the field and good luck to all!
